The Modern & Medieval Languages Test

The Modern & Medieval Languages Test (MML) is a test based on a passage in English (approx. 300-350 words), followed by two or three questions. The questions must all be answered within a single 200-250 word essay in a language that you are studying at A-Level (not English!). The questions require you to understand (comprehend) the passage, to add your own views and ideas, and to write in a grammatically correct and fluid manner.

How long does it take? The time allowed is 45 minutes.

How are the results reported? Test papers are available to admissions tutors to use as part of the interview. No marking scheme is available.

Who uses it? The test is used to select students for Modern and Medieval Language courses at Cambridge University.

How do I take it? The test is taken in the appropriate Cambridge College on the same day as the entrance interview.

How can I prepare?

  • Basic preparation. Practice using the sample material available on the Modern & Medieval Languages website. In particular practice writing the correct number of words.

  • Advanced preparation. This test is about showing how well you can write in a different language, and whilst you will not be expected to know the exact words for a particular English expression, being able to write in a lively and engaging fashion is important. You must practice! Try writing short 250-word reviews based on Arts related articles from newspapers or magazines.
