A test that is under development is uniTEST. This is designed to assess reasoning skills across two broad areas: mathematics & science, and arts, humanities & social science.
The test includes 96 multiple-choice items and is taken over 2.5 hours. It includes questions designed to assess quantitative (numerical) and ‘formal’ (logical) reasoning that are based on information presented in tables, graphs, texts and diagrams. These questions are aimed at the abilities required for mathematics & science.
Other questions focus on verbal and visual comprehension, judgement and subjective understanding (‘plausible’ reasoning), and are directed at the abilities that underpin the arts, humanities and social sciences.
The idea is that individuals will take the test, and stronger results for quantitative and formal reasoning will indicate an aptitude for science & mathematics; and those that are weighted towards verbal and plausible reasoning will suggest arts, humanities and social sciences. Both will require good decision making skills and the ability to analyse arguments.
